Buying small-pet bedding: assessing wood and aspen shavings

Emily pets editorial team

Choosing a bag of bedding is straightforward. Specifying a reliable trade product takes more: a clear wood species, traceable product information and packaging suited to your sales channel. Buyers supplying Germany can benefit from a structured assessment of wood and aspen shavings. The confirmed characteristics of the specific variant matter more than its product name alone.

1. Record the wood species and specification clearly

The Emily pets range lists wood shavings with birch/pine as the material and aspen shavings with aspen as the material. The aspen product also lists an unscented version. For wood shavings, confirm which species or blend belongs to the requested variant. The general term ‘wood shavings’ does not replace a precise specification.

Ask about processing, particle structure and any additives. A wood species description does not establish a particular dust level or suitability for every animal species. Define the intended application and confirm the relevant product instructions before drafting your own packaging copy.

2. Examine samples under comparable conditions

Do not assess only the sealed sample pack. Open it, loosen the contents and photograph the structure. Look at consistency of the shavings, visible foreign material, handling during pouring and packaging condition. These observations support incoming-goods planning; they do not replace laboratory analysis.

If dust generation, moisture or liquid absorption are important purchasing criteria, agree the measurement method, unit and acceptable range beforehand. Compare only results obtained with the same method. A simple demonstration video without defined test conditions cannot establish a reliable ranking between products.

Keep a clearly identified approval sample. Record the variant, date and agreed criteria so purchasing and quality control can work from the same reference later.

3. Separate weight, volume and carton dimensions

Our current catalogue lists 500 g, 1 kg and 4 kg packs for both lines. Confirm which sizes are available for your order. These weight specifications do not automatically describe the usable volume after loosening.

Also request bag dimensions, units per outer carton, carton dimensions and pallet configuration. Shipping packaging matters for online sales; shelf space and readability also matter in specialist retail. Calculate with confirmed packing data rather than dimensions estimated from a photograph.

4. Match private-label packaging to the product

An OEM inquiry can start with your specification and design. An ODM discussion develops the product and packaging concept together. Define the variant, fill weight, language and artwork you need. Agree where to place the item identifier, barcode and batch information.

German packaging copy should describe the actual goods. Claims such as ‘dust-free’, ‘antibacterial’ or a guaranteed usage duration need suitable supporting evidence. Storage, use and disposal instructions also need to be agreed for the specific product. Minimum quantity, cost and delivery timing are confirmed per project.

5. Turn the assessment into a clear inquiry

Specify wood shavings or aspen shavings as your intended product line, followed by target market, sales channel, pack size and planned quantity. Include your sample criteria and artwork where applicable. State which details you still need rather than assuming unconfirmed properties.

Request a quotation with a clear product scope, packing data and delivery terms. This lets you compare a fully specified purchasing proposal rather than just the price per bag. The product pages below introduce the two listed lines.
